Interview with Itetsu Ogura

Figure and illustration artists Itetsu Ogura recently gave us a few minutes of his time to discuss his approach to his works.

What was the initial motivation for producing figures?
I wanted to give my gay friend something handcrafted as a birthday gift. I then produced a first three dimensional work in the motif of gay. Although I had produced some clay works before that, it was the first time to show people the figure that I made from plastic.

Where did you get the inspiration for your theme of two and three dimensional works?
I have liked to see Greek and Roman sculpture since I was a child because I can feel the beauty of human body and spirit. It would be great if my works can have the allure of Greek and Roman sculpture. Also, I would like to express my idea of beautiful and attractive men. A beautiful living human body breathes, sweats, gets excited and changes. A beautiful living human body has emotions and communicates. I do not really like artworks which are only visually balanced. And also, I do not like to express in my work sex which is just for fun and does not have any
romance.

I always think about light while producing works. Three dimensional works produce unexpected charms according to the angle we see it from, the place, time and direction of light. I would like you to see my artworks and enjoy the changes of light and shadow.

What kind of work are you going to produce in the future?
The time I usually spend for producing works seems relatively long. However, I always have ideas. I would like to shape those ideas which include both two and three dimensional works.

Do you have any fetish? Or, is there any special fetishism that is expressed in your art works?
I think that there are things or ways needed on each occasion, and it depends on the contents I want to portray at that time.

Do you have a boyfriend or partner?
No, unfortunately.

Please tell us about your future plans
My dream is to be offered personal commissions as well as producing works with my own idea.
