In this reoccurring column I’d like to take a closer look at each of the individual artists we’ve introduced on the website so far.
Whether already famous, or still finding their footing, I’ll be introducing a individual artworks from each of our stable of artists.
My reasoning behind this new column is that each artist has put great effort into each of their works, and by focussing on individual artworks I believe that we can get to know each of the artists on a deeper level.
From the second half of this year, I’m planning to launch exhibitions by individuals and small groups of artists. In our large scale exhibitions everyone has had a chance to get to know each of our artists but spotlighting single artists and small groups would be of benefit not only to the artists themselves, but also the collectors who love them.
For the past few years we’ve collected all our artist’s works together into the genre of “gay art” in order to bring focus to the number of gay artists working in Japan today. Of course we will continue to spotlight the crème of Japanese gay art for our audiences, but in fact it is the individual talents of each artist that, little by little, has built their reputations and gained each artist a solid fan-base.
Spotlighting certain artists in their own private exhibitions is the first step in helping these talented people take the next step in their international careers.
Spotlight #1: The Works of Itetsu Ogura
Itetsu Ogura is focused on creating both two dimensional and sculptural works.
I receive a large number of requests in regards to Ogura’s works, and it would seem that I actually forgot to introduce one of his sculptures recently on the website! (The artist also commented on this… My apologies!)
Ogura was a hit at our Mardi Gras exhibition and his sculptures are highly praised so I would like to take a closer look at one of his three dimensional works.
This work was inspired by the ancient gladiators. It builds on the gay fantasy of the Roman male society.
Although small in size, it masterfully draws the audiences’ eye. Ogura only produced three of these painstakingly detailed pieces, and he has advised that the mould has been broken. No more pieces will be made. These are a definite rarity!
