New Artist :Kou

Kou is a new artist from Macau in China, and holds a Portuguese passport. He is now studying in New York. Whilst Kou is not Japanese he is a very exciting new edition and something of a rarity.
His art is very unique and cute.
Every year I introduce a new artist at Mardi Gras and this is the first time Kou’s gay art will be exposed outside New York and it will be in Sydney.
His confidence is growing which is a great thing for gay art lovers and for Kou.

Kou doesn’t have good English but his Japanese is almost perfect. That’s where I come in. let me explain Kou in his own (edited for English) words:

Artist Comment:
My name is Kou. I am an Asian guy. I am living and studying art in New York City. I am gay and until now have been a very closeted gay. I got a great surprise when I arrived in New York City. In my life it has always been difficult to be myself and to express myself. New York showed something very special to me.
I can be gay and open about it and not worry about repercussions.
This makes my life more fulfilling and I can enjoy it without trying to hide myself and my feelings.
In China people think homosexuality is a kind of mental illness, and gay people feel they are made to feel ashamed very much.
This results in gay people leading very secretive and lonely lives. Some of them feel so pressured by the negative feeling that they get married even though they know it’s not what they want.
However, being in New York, I have gained a sense of confidence. I don’t feel ashamed or like I am letting anyone down. I feel inspired and can let myself flourish and let that flow into my artwork. Now I can confidently let my artistic side flow free and right now it want’s to express itself though “happy penises”.
New York has made me realize that it is OK to be yourself and being yourself i very fulfilling, regardless of your sexuality. I want to express my surprise, joy, confidence, sense of purpose, and my dreams of romance through my art.
This experience has given me the confidence and inspiration to show my artworks and to show myself through my art, and I hope my story will give others some confidence and inspiration to be who they want to be, or to support their friends in being who they are
This is me, I want to show my new works and my new life to everybody. Hope you love my Hap-penis.

Thank you.

Kou
