Кэнъя Симидзу(KENYA SHIMIZU)(Born 1976)
Kenya Shimizu made his debut at the Rainbow Arts Festival (a yearly LGBTI arts festival) in 2000 and in 2001 was awarded first place in the Tom of Finland Foundation’s 5th Emerging Erotic Artist Contest. 2008 saw Shimizu hold his first individual exhibition at the Adonis Art Gallery in London and in 2009-10 he exhibited with a number of other gay Japanese artists in group exhibitions in Australia. Shimizu’s reputation has continued to grow both in Japan and overseas.
Shimizu’s works primarily depict images of samurai and the beauty of the Japanese man with particular attention to traditional Japanese tattoos which cover the bodies of most of his subjects. Shimizu states “In my works I would like to express the idea of the ‘Ideal Man’ who shows allegiance to his lord, respects others, upholds justice and protects the weak.” Shimizu is a young artist expected to make his mark on an international scale.
